SAVING THE BAY

For Earth Day (and California history), we learned about the San Francisco Bay by watching this excellent DVD produced by KQED/KTEH. Narrated by Robert Redford, the DVD starts with the creation of the Bay then explores the effects of the Native Peoples, the Spanish and other explorers, the Gold Rush, and the growth during the 20th century on one of the planet's treasured water refuges.

Here are some very informative clips from the video. If you can watch the entire DVD (4 hours), you'll be considered a Bay Area expert on the Bay!

The Formation of the Bay

The Unique Estuary

Salmon and Herring Fisheries of the Bay

Vanishing Tidelands
