HW - Thursday, 3/23

Parents:
  • Quick Check (Math) 14-4 quiz had a question that confused students. It read:
"Jeff was 1/4 of his way home from school. How many feet away from his house was he if the distance from his home to school was 812 feet?"

It was interpreted two different ways: he was 1/4 away from home (choice A, 203 feet) OR he was 1/4 away form school on his way home (choice B, 609 feet).

The book says choice A is the answer, but I am accepting choice B as well since it was a poorly worded question.

Please have your child return their quiz to school so it can be reviewed and/or corrected.
Thank you.
  • Stem Night tickets were distributed to students today
  • PTA News:
  • CONGRATULATIONS to our February San Jose Sharks Reading is Cool winner: KATELYN!

  • The students enjoyed asking questions and getting free books from the Scholastic reps, Michael and Scott, who visited. It was an interesting visit: they hung out for the morning, took a few pictures of the classroom library and when we gathered as a class, conversed with me re: the Scholastic Book Club, and talked with the staff during lunch (which they provided from Panera). They left right after the students returned from lunch.

Worth Sharing: Acrylamide Levels Found in Kid Snacks

          From the Mercury News article:
Walgreens’ ‘Disney’ animal crackers contain cancerous chemical, group says

"Turns out the bare necessities involved in making that version of the crackers requires higher baking temperatures, which produces excessive levels of a cancer-causing chemical called acrylamide, said Charles Margulis of the Oakland-based Center for Environmental Health."

"Acrylamide is formed during frying, roasting, broiling, toasting or baking that results in browning of foods. In general, foods cooked to darker colors have higher acrylamide levels."

"Other animal crackers the group found contained levels of acrylamide requiring a warning under California law were: Barbara’s (Weetabix) Snackimals Vanilla Cookies; Stauffer’s Animal Crackers Original; Gold Emblem (a CVS store brand); Kirkland Signature organic (a Costco store brand); Mi-Del Gluten-free Arrowroot Cookies; Cookies Animalitos Galletas (La Moderna brand); and Galletas de Animalitos Con Betun brand."

"The group also found unhealthy acrylamide leveIs in eight out of 17 brands of ginger snap cookies, including Pepperidge Farm Ginger Family Cookies, Nabisco Ginger Snaps, Market Pantry (a Target store-brand) Gingersnaps, Signature Kitchens (an Albertson’s store-brand) Ginger Snaps, and others."
