A Short Blog Post for Now

THANK YOU parents and students for the thoughtful gifts and cards!

Students went home with a few little somethings from me:

  • PACKET (homework): Due the Tuesday we get back from our break
  • PACKET (fun): NOT due but tote that packet along to kill time at the shopping malls, in the car driving from one destination to another, on the airplane, or when your child says, "I'm bored."
  • Little holiday bag filled with treats and goodies. Enjoy and...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

          • School Site Council meeting @ 5:00 p.m.
          • Ruskin PTA meeting @ 6:00 p.m. Ruskin's social worker, Aleece Nyland, will be presenting on the Role of the Social Worker and Bullying/Peer Conflict.

        • TOMORROW is a Spirit Day: DISNEY DAY. Dress up as a Disney character (not Tarzan, please); bring Disney dolls or stuffed animals; wear Disney clothes; and/or bring a Disney book to share. Remember: Star Wars and Marvel are OWNED by Disney (you're welcome).

        • Friday, November 11, is Veterans Day. It is both a federal and state holiday so there will be NO SCHOOL. Please think about those who have served our country and especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Read more about the holiday: http://www.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp
        • Due to errors in the computer program, I will be reviewing the math tests students have been taking online. Unfortunately, the online program was marking answers like 4539 incorrect because there wasn't a comma (4,539). Also, if the order of some numbers were wrong, for example when a student was executing the expanded algorithm for multiplication, then the computer gave zero to fractional credit despite the correctness of the partial products. It will be a time-consuming task and the Topic 6 test may be the last online math test we are going to take this year for quite some time.
        • Pizza Hut vouchers for a free personal pizza were distributed today.

          HW - Monday, 10/31

          Parents:
          •  HAPPY  HALLOWEEN!
            • If you're going Trick o' Treating, be safe tonight and let your parents/guardians check your candy first!
          • THANK YOU to those who brought treats to share with your classmates! They were all appreciative!
          • As a class, we are participating with some other Ruskin classes in the Trick or Treat for UNICEFThis is optional but students have learned about what UNICEF does around the world. We will count the collected money in class on Thursday, 11/3. We will then total the collections, and I will take them to the nearest Coinstar, which is processing the donations without a fee. The receipt is then mailed to UNICEF. Afterwards, I will share on the Blog how much we have donated and what that roughly helps purchase for UNICEF's causes. To learn more, please visit www.unicefusa.org/trick-or-treat.
          • LOCK IN the early Yearbook sales have started! Best time to buy them is now because they're only $20 AND you get to personalize your back cover. Prices go up scarily to $30 after 10/31.
          • We have started two Reading Log programs for October: Book It!, sponsored by Pizza Hut, and Reading is Cool, sponsored by the San Jose Sharks. Students who complete the monthly reading log get a coupon for a free personal pizza and entered for possible prizes from the Sharks.
          • Congratulations to Andrea, who had the winning design for our t-shirt! (We are the "Popularly Peaceful Pandas")
            • UPDATE: The printing started on Friday!
            • Here is the FINAL revision:

          The Wet Weekend Upon Us

It started this morning and as I am typing this, we are having a break in the weather pattern. Stay warm and dry, and drive safely!

          A couple of news points:

          • Lego name tags are pretty much complete for everyone in the class. However, there are a handful of students missing pieces, so I will be getting their counts on Monday for the last order.
          • El Dia de los Muertos masks are almost finished. Students will be taking them home on Monday.
          • NO MONDAY FLAG POLE.
          • The Halloween Parade begins at 8:45 a.m. The weather projects to be cooperating with us. Here is the layout of where classes and the parent area will be situated.
          • Trick or Treat for UNICEF donations are due on Tuesday, 11/1.
          • November Scholastic Book Orders are due by Friday, 11/4.
          • Next week
            • Monday: Time for Kids packet is due; Time for Kids quiz; Halloween parade; treat exchange; maybe a student's birthday celebration
            • Wednesday: Topic 6 Math test
            • Friday: VTA in-class presentation
          • Two Toys R Us events this weekend:

          HW - Thursday, 10/27

          Parents:
          • Wednesday Folders went out today.
          • As a class, we are participating with some other Ruskin classes in the Trick or Treat for UNICEF. This is optional but students have learned about what UNICEF does around the world. We will count the collected money in class on Thursday, 11/3. We will then total the collections, and I will take them to the nearest Coinstar, which is processing the donations without a fee. • Most of the class built their Lego name tags today. However, we encountered some problems: students didn't count correctly based on their design; students didn't count their pieces correctly causing some shortages; and we have some extra pieces (as a result of miscounts). Once all students have finished putting their name tags together, I start another order for the missing elements.
          • Yearbook sales have started! Best time to buy them is now because they're only $20 AND you get to personalize your back cover. Prices go up scarily to $30 after 10/31.
          • Monday, 10/31 (All Hallows' Eve):
            • Halloween Parade will begin at 8:40 a.m. on the black top/basketball courts. There will only be one parade, and we are requesting that parents please WAIT AT THE LUNCH TABLES while the classes are moving to their spots. Violent costumes are not allowed. Students who cannot participate will be provided an alternative activity monitored by a staff member.
            • We will have a brief treat exchange in the afternoon. It's not a party but just an exchange of goodies before we go home. Treats must be purchased at a store and cannot be homemade. You may also provide alternatives like pencils, little toys/trinkets, etc. If you would like to bring treats to share, please remember we have 29 students. Thank you!
          • We have started two Reading Log programs for October: Book It!, sponsored by Pizza Hut, and Reading is Cool, sponsored by the San Jose Sharks. Students who complete the monthly reading log get a coupon for a free personal pizza and entered for possible prizes from the Sharks.
