Cormorant Fishing

One of this past week's spelling words, cormorants are used to fish for humans and this activity is practiced throughout Asia, especially in China and Japan.

Next, here is an image of a cormorant fisherman extracting the fish from the bird:
This is the related article on the practice, called ukai in Japan: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2426.html

Weekend HW and a Few Things

Weekend HW:
- MATH Textbook pg. 251
- Work on Cinderella Stories

Few Things:
- I am extending the Cinderella Stories deadline to Friday, February 14.
- Students NEED to bring a working copy of their Cinderella story on Monday. You can also email it to me, if it makes it easier than printing it.
[If anyone is using Google Docs to type their story, please share that document with me using my school email address (click here for it). This way, I can give my opinions right on the document itself.]
- We will prep the books on Monday and, on that same day, once I see a student has started writing a good amount of his/her story, I will hand him/her the book for the project.
- It is planned to watch Cinderella, the movie, on Wednesday. Look for permission slips to be distributed on Monday. Please return them ASAP.
- Due to Friday's activities and to allow more time for the Cinderella stories, we will NOT be reading the next story in our Language Arts anthologies. So, there won't be any spelling activities or tests next week. We will still have Wordly Wise.
- Lunar New Year will be celebrated at Ruskin on Friday, 1/31. Here is the schedule:
-- 9:15 (3rd/4th/5th) Puppet show assembly by Magical Moonshine Theater. It will be based on Vietnamese and Chinese folktales.
-- 10:50 a.m. Lunar New Year Parade. Your child can come to school wearing traditional dress if so desired.

This is pretty cool: Disney's Frozen - "Let It Go" in 25 languages

This reminds me a lot of the great finale from Les Miserables: The Dream Cast in Concert, a production to celebrate its 10th Anniversary concert:

Encore #2: "Do You Hear the People Sing?" followed by "One Day More"

A little trivia related to Les Miserables:

  • Colm Wilkinson, who is thought of as the quintessential Jean Valjean, appears as the Bishop in the 2012 movie version of Les Miserables.
  • Lea Salonga, who plays Eponine in the 10th Anniversary performance, was the singing voice behind Jasmine in Disney's Aladdin and Mulan in Disney's Mulan and Mulan II. She later played Fantine in the 25th Anniversary performance of Les Miserables.
  • Judy Kuhn, who portrays Cossette in the 10th Anniversary performance, was the singing voice behind Pocahontas in Disney's Pocahontas and Pocahontas II and Princess Ting-Ting in Mulan II.

ENJOY!

The Kid from Our Scholastic News Issue

Since we don't have a new Scholastic News issue for this week due to the MLK holiday, I did have one saved from earlier in the year.

In this issue, there was a boy in one of the articles who knew how to tickle the ivories at a young age: Ethan Bortnick.

Here's the link to his YouTube channel. Feel free to peruse the videos, especially the ones when he was younger:  http://www.youtube.com/user/ethanbortnick?feature=watch

START IT TODAY!!!

NOTES:
  • Tomorrow is our Code Red Drill. We will practice in the morning and then execute the drill - along with the rest of the school - after the morning recess. It should take about an hour. Please let your child know that their safety is paramount and we must work together as a class - as silently as we can - to create our barricades and wait patiently. A large portion of the day will be dedicated to this as clean up and restoration of the room will be time-consuming.

Double Coins on Sumdog

For a limited time, Sumdog will be rewarding students double coins for every correct answer.

This special reward period begins on 1/20 and ends on 1/24.

Also, they have released a new app titled, "Sumdog" (how original, huh?). This app replaces their old "Snowball" app and let's you play "Snowball" and, if you have a subscription, "Kiteboarding." They will be using this new app to launch free and subscribed games. The app is FREE, but some games will require a subscription ($6/month, I believe).

Visit Sumdog.com for more info.

Incomplete Assignments

I just wanted to share an observation from the past two weeks.

It appears that a good number of students are not completing their assignments, especially Wordly Wise and LA/Math/History workbooks. I've witnessed a lot of blank/unanswered questions. "I left it at home" and "I left it at school" are the most used reasons; rarely, if ever, is "I didn't have enough time" used by the students.

Doing the following measures should help correct these issues:
__ Use the HW Blog as a check-off list.
__ Make sure ALL work that is to be turned in is taken home.
__ Review all completed work.
__ Make sure all completed work is in one folder and placed in the backpack before bedtime.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Weekend HW (1/17-1/20)

STAR Reading and AR Results

Parents,

Today's Wednesday Folder did not have the STAR Reading and AR results because of some technological changes.

First, teachers were issued MacBook Pro laptops in lieu of the desktop computers ("virtual desktops").  Second, in doing so, folders and information were migrated but some programs were not. STAR Reading and AR programs are still on the school's servers but access has not been routed to the teachers' laptops yet.

In the event that the programs are not compatible with the MacBooks, I will have to access the reports solely on the student "virtual" desktops. The problems with doing this are: 1) it's time consuming and 2) printers need to be reinstalled every time in order for reports to be printed out.

Going forward, I hope that Ruskin can subscribe to STAR/AR Enterprise (the online version); however, I know that it is probably going to be cost-prohibitive. The $9.10 per child isn't the issue; it's the $599 upgrade fee for AR + $599 upgrade fee for STAR, $499 hosting fee and a $499 hosting fee renewal. Moreover, it's going to be an on-going (yearly) cost (not sure about the upgrade charges).

I will keep you posted if there are any changes to the STAR and AR Reading program access.

Expect the STAR and AR results to go home tomorrow.

- Mr. Amutan

P.S., Student access is UNAFFECTED as they still can take quizzes and the STAR Reading assessment on our school's computers.
