The Picture of Lou Gehrig Ending the Streak

This picture shows Lou informing the umpires that he is benching himself and the official lineup must be changed.

From the Stuff Nobody Cares About blog, the caption reads:

"Yankee captain Lou Gehrig stuns Tigers manager Del Baker, home plate umpire Steve Basil and umpires Red Ornsby and Bill Summers as Gehrig informs them he has benched himself. (photo AP)"

But he didn't play in that game. He pulled himself out of the game before it began.

His LAST game he played was at Yankee Stadium versus the Washington Senators (the original one, not today's team) on April 30, 1939. He batted 0-4 and had a batting average of .143 at that point.

UPDATE: Pending California Student Data Release

Sharon Noguchi from the Mercury News recently wrote an update regarding this controversial release of student data.  I emailed a bit of the background story and information on how to remove your child's data from being released. (Later, news outlets clarified that the "removal form" wasn't to be; it was simply an objection to the release of your child's data.)

Well, it looks like the word getting out really worked.

Noguchi wrote:

"Responding to overwhelming public protest, a federal judge has decided records of 10 million California students won't be released to attorneys in a special-education lawsuit.
...
After news of the pending data release spread, the court has been so inundated with objection forms that it can't even read them. (Judge) Mueller this week ordered the forms archived in sealed boxes."

This is a good reminder that "We, the People" can - and still - matter in bringing about effective changes in government.

Because "we" comprise and are the government.
