Western Union Telegraph Map
Known as the Transcontinental Telegraph Line, the ability to transmit telegraph messages from the East Coast of the United States to the West Coast was awarded to Hiram Sibley and his company, Pacific Telegraph Company, in 1860. Sibley would become the first president of Western Union, which controlled a majority of the telegraph lines in the U.S.
