Any boxing fans out there?

Next Friday, October 4: 49ers Gatorade Junior Training Camp @ Ruskin!

Next Friday, the San Francisco 49ers Youth Football staff will be at Ruskin talking to the 2nd-5th graders about the NFL's Play 60 program and hosting a "mini-camp" to expose the students to some exercises and activities football players do. Here's a brief description of the day's activities:

"We (SF 49ers Youth Football staff) focus on PLAY 60 which is being active for 60 minutes day. We give positive messages about working hard and teamwork.  We provide all the equipment... We bring the kids together for an introduction (PLAY 60 message) and warm up with dynamic stretching. We have 4 stations that the kids will rotate through. A QB drill, RB drill, WR drill and proper tackling drill. The organizations volunteers might need to run a drill with help from the 49ers youth football staff.  A Gatorade hydration station is available during breaks.  The camp is all non-contact and has very basic teaching points. As we wrap up we have a little conclusion on what we learned. Overall it is roughly a 1 ½ hr camp from intro to conclusion."

Before your child can participate in this awesome event, you will need to sign and return a Parent Release/Consent form. I will give it to your child tomorrow.

When the form is signed and returned, please make sure your child is dressed for the event and has a great attitude for it! Media may be on-hand.

Possible Suspension of STAR Testing in May

Parents,

On Back to School Night, I mentioned that this year is a transition year.

It looks like the transition from CA State Standards to Common Core Standards may accelerate more quickly with the pending suspension of STAR testing in May.

If this bill passes, it lifts a burden from our shoulders as we no longer have to do two things at once: prepare students for the STAR test and cover California state standards as well as cover Common Core Standards.

Smarter Balanced Assessments will be used in place of the STAR and will help expose students to the 2015 Common Core standardized tests - as well as help educators better understand how to teach the Common Core standards and prepare students for the 2015 test.

Keep your eyes and ears out for any news related to this Assembly Bill.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Governor Expected to Sign AB 484—Suspends Current Assessments to Make Way for Common Core

Governor Jerry Brown has AB 484 by Assemblymember Susan Bonilla (D-Concord) on his desk and is expected to sign the bill that would overhaul the state's assessment and accountability system and align it to the new Common Core State Standards. AB 484 suspends the current Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program immediately and allows students and educators to fully prepare to transition to the new, computer-based assessments. The state's new assessment program is called the Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress (MAPP).

Field tests of the Smarter Balanced Assessments will be given in 2014 and are expected to reveal how prepared schools are to administer the new assessments and how students respond. The tests will be given to students in English Language Arts and Mathematics in grades 3-8 and grade 10. AB 484 lifts the state requirement of testing second graders, which was never required under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
Because the transition will leave a lack of comparable data, AB 484 authorizes the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction to suspend the Academic Performance Index (API) for the first two years of the assessment, 2013-14 and 2014-15. The bill also restricts the use of data from field tests for development purposes only.

AB 484 Timeline (2013-14):
Field testing of computer-based SBAC tests. CSTs not administered in 2014!
2014-15:              Full implementation of SBAC in all districts. Paper testing will be administered for those not quite ready.
2015-16:              SBAC assessment results set the new Academic Performance Index (API) base.
2016-17:              SBAC assessment results used to calculate API growth targets.

[UPDATE] VIDEOS: Titanic

Parents,

Here are some videos about the Titanic that were produced by National Geographic and A&E.  Your child may find them interesting as they provide some background on the great ship, its disaster, as well as its historical and cultural legacy.  They will enrich their understanding of the tragic event and support the language arts activities in class.

(Note: There may be some commercials and possibly some inappropriate language in the comment section. So AVOID showing the comment boxes by going to full screen or minimizing the window!)

UPDATE:  IF viewing from a tablet, the YouTube videos may not work. Please click on the link below the video to view it.

NOTES:
  • The first day of Fitness Center went well.  They loved to play with the X-Box Kinects but some students were getting used to the console (because they never used one before). I just want to stress with the students that safety, form, and technique are important. Thank you to the parents who provided their children with a water bottle and a towel as well as dressed them appropriately.
    • If there is a parent who wants to volunteer for the 1:05-1:50 Fitness Center time, please contact me. An extra set of eyes, ears and hands would be great!
  • Spelling activities are just different ways for students to learn, apply, and study their spelling words. It is recommended that they should do one activity each day. However, I know that busy schedules sometimes prevent this, so just make sure all four activities are completed by Friday.

UPDATE 9/23: Parent Volunteers Needed for Don Edwards Field Trip Training

For this field trip to be a success, we will need Parent Volunteers to lead the outdoor classes.

DON'T WORRY! You will be trained!
DON'T WORRY! You read from a script (lines provided for you to read to the students)!
DON'T WORRY! You will probably be working with another parent!
DON'T WORRY! We'll be there for you! :)

These are the MOST important jobs as there are a couple of stations that need to be staffed!
If we don't get enough parents to staff them, we may not be able to have a successful field trip!

California Geography Dictionaries and Spelling Activities

Parents,

First, I did a count this afternoon of the California Geography Dictionaries and Spelling Activities that were turned in, and it was a bit disappointing to see that there are still some outstanding assignments:
  • 20 students turned in their California Geography Dictionaries. After two weeks of working on them, I am still missing 11.
  • 16 of the 32 Spelling Activities were turned in.
Granted, I know it was a lot of work the past two weeks. I also know it was their first week of completing Spelling Activities.

So, I'll cut them some slack this time and give them the opportunity to complete their work and turn them in.

However, I expect that they learn how to utilize the time I give them in class to complete their work as well as return completed assignments on time.

Second, I did assign Math homework pages 48-51, but the due date is on Tuesday. I will give them time on Monday to complete the pages. We will also have a test on Wednesday.

Go Bells! Beat Piedmont Hills (7:00 p.m. tonight @ Piedmont Hills H.S.)!

Have a great weekend!

Mr. Amutan

Sumdog Update

Kudos to the top five most active students on Sumdog (based on the number of questions attempted): Samuel, Brian, Sabrina, Eunice, and Edmond.

  • Four of them attempted over 1,000 questions with at least 81% accuracy.
  • One of the four attempted over 4,000 questions!
Though I would like to see a higher accuracy score (90%+), keep up the good work!
I also hope to see some new names on this list!

Chinatown's best-attended annual event, will begin with a grand opening ceremony and parade at 11am on Saturday starting at California and Grant. As in years past, events will include free live entertainment, an open-air pedestrian street bazaar featuring a wide array of bargain merchandise, and multiple parades along historic Grant Avenue between California Street and Columbus Avenue. Festivities will continue non-stop until 6pm daily. Thousands of local residents and foreign visitors typically attend the Moon Festival each year.

A variety of cultural performances will be offered on the main stage throughout the festivities, hosted by Mistresses of Ceremonies Anita Cheung and Rose Chung. Guest entertainers include dancers in ornate costumes from the Flying Angels. Other performers include Taiko drumming group, Jiken Daiko and Hawaiian group, Ka Ehu Kai. Festival attendees will enjoy the contemporary sounds of popular Mix, Mash and Bash on Saturday afternoon and Just Jammin' on Sunday afternoon. World renowned grandmaster, Dr. Effie Chow, will demonstrate some therapeutic Qi Gong exercises on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.

A special Dragon parade will occur on Saturday at 5 p.m. in memory of Sinclair Louie, founder of the SF Chinatown's Autumn Moon Festival. Mr. Louie was a well respected Chinatown entrepreneur and philanthropist. The grand dragon finale will be held at 5 p.m.on Sunday.
