What Are the COMMON CORE Standards?

Along with 40 other states and territories, California's Department of Education has adopted the Common Core standards.

How are these different from our present state standards?

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
- more COMPLEX TEXT and their academic language
- using EVIDENCE FROM TEXT in reading, writing, and speaking activities
- BUILDING KNOWLEDGE through content-rich non-fiction.
...In other words, LOTS OF NON-FICTION.

MATH
- placing a greater FOCUS on fewer standards
- linking topics and thinking across the grade levels creating COHERENCE
- developing RIGOROUS curricula around understanding, developing fluency and skills, and applying math concepts.
