HW - Monday, 2/29 (Happy Leap Day!)

Parents:
  • Today, our class took District Mid-Term Assessments online via the CAASPP website. These tests will be based around certain standards (2 ELA and 1 Math) and not all of them. Almost all finished, but due to absences and a few other students not finishing, we will complete them tomorrow. Students who have completed their District Assessments will be working on Sumdog or other online practice sites.
  • This Friday (3/4) through the following Friday (3/11) are MINIMUM DAYS so that I may meet with some parents for conferences. I do not have to meet with all of you: just the few who have been sent conference forms.
  • Next PTA General Meeting is Wednesday, March 9 at 6 p.m. in the Library.
  • March 23: Our next field trip to the Discovery Museum (via Light Rail) with our Little Buddies. Forms to go out next week.
  • Spring Break (No School): March 25 - April 3
  • The next Ruskin Lego Challenge and the registration form has been posted: RuskinLUG.blogspot.com. Please register now!

Weekend Tidbits

Couple of notes heading into the weekend:
  • Per Ms. Kailyn: "As of Friday afternoon, only 19 spots are available for STEM Night...please turn in ASAP."
  • HW: Math pgs. 242-243
  • Conference forms went out today. The students who received conference forms with dates and times to select need to return them on Monday.
  • Next week, we will do the district CAASPP website testing in LA and Math.
  • Next Friday (3/4) through the following Friday (3/11) are MINIMUM DAYS. Please plan accordingly.
  • I will be out on Wednesday for Report Card and Conference Prep. I believe Mrs. Trinidad will be the sub for the day.
  • We will finish Pride of the Yankees next week.
  • Enjoy the weather and remember Monday is a Leap Day!

If you have Netflix, there is a movie about Misty Copeland (a ballerina the class read about in a Time for Kids magazine recently) titled A Ballerina's Tale (Not Rated). Also worth mentioning: there's a Bill Nye educational show about the Earth's crust (Collection 1, Episode 1).

Earthquake in Taiwan

First, thoughts and prayers go to those affected by the earthquake in Taiwan. We have some families at Ruskin who have relatives there, so I hope they're unharmed.

Second, as a class, we've talked about earthquake materials and construction regulations in science so it's appropriate to bring this up. A person took pictures of a building that crumbled. Apparently, it looks like tin cans (and it was mentioned elsewhere, styrofoam) were used as "filler" building material.

(Photo from Daily Mail Online)

This is why we have regulations regarding the way buildings in California are built (to withstand earthquakes).

Super Bowl Weekend

It's going to be gorgeous - and busy - this weekend.

Enjoy it. Be safe.

The only homework this weekend is: keep working on their Cinderella stories/books.

Go Panthers.
